A CROSS-CENTER COLLABORATION May 29, 2020 We’d like to invite you to participate in a new cross-center collaborative effort – DemSemX – that will virtually bring together faculty and students from 8 U.S. population research centers (Bowling Green, Cornell, Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, Texas, UCLA and UW-Madison) to enhance scholarly interaction and graduate training across institutions. The co-organizers are all alumni of UW-Madison, where the weekly Demography Seminar (‘DemSem’) has for decades been a key feature of the intellectual community and graduate student training there. Together, we aim to take advantage of new virtual technologies and economies of scale to provide opportunities for scholarly interaction and training across our 8 centers. We will start with a first event on Friday, May 29th, 2:00-4:00pm EDT. If this goes well, we’ll potentially continue these collaborative sessions longer term. The May 29th event will consist of two parts: Part I: Designing COVID-19 Research, 2:00-3:00pm EDT (https://go.wisc.edu/4rtgy7) Wendy Manning (Bowling Green) and Elizabeth Wrigley-Field (Minnesota) will present and field questions on their new plans underway for conducting COVID-19 responsive research. See the attached flyer for more details.
Part II: Breakout Sessions with Student Presentations, 3:00-4:00pm EDT Breakout rooms will be hosted by each of the 8 universities. Two students per breakout room will have 15 minutes each to talk about their own research, and at least two faculty members per room will be asked to respond, ask questions and guide discussion, much like a conference roundtable. We hope that you will participate in two ways: First, by attending the plenary session on May 29th. Second, we hope that you will join the student breakout rooms to interact with students about their work. Some of you will specifically be asked to serve as respondents in a particular room (and we hope you will accept if contacted), but anyone is welcome to participate in any of the rooms. Details to follow about the breakout rooms and how to access them. Our own students Megan Evans (with co-author Alex Chapman) and Jane Lankes (with co-author Mary Shenk) will be presenting their works in progress during the May 29th breakout sessions. Thank you for your support of this new cross-center effort! |
