Population Health Working Group
|Date||01/31/18 12:00pm to 1:00pm|
As the new semester begins, I would like to invite you to join a new PRI-supported working group that I am organizing on Population Health research. Given how many of our faculty and students are engaged in health research from a demographic perspective, it is my hope that many of you would like to attend, present, and potentially collaborate as an outgrowth of this group.
I would like for us to meet once a month, and conduct the meeting in one of two formats, according to the preferences of the presenter for the month:
1) Paper workshop format: In this format, the presenter will submit a paper draft to the working group listserv in advance of the meeting. All participants who are able will read it, and come prepared to offer suggestions for improvement in the research or article, discuss publication strategy, and anything else the participants would like.
2) Journal club format: In this format, the presenter can select 2-3 recently published papers selected around a common theme for the group to read and critically discuss. Anything relevant to population health research that you find exciting is acceptable. In this approach, the presenter could give a short presentation outlining the contributions, strengths, and weaknesses of the papers, how they interrelate, and what they found interesting about them, followed by general discussion.
I would be meet using other formats as well if someone wishes.
For the spring semester, we are planning to meet in 605 Oswald at 12pm on the last Wednesday of each month – the first one is January 31st. Lunch will be served thanks to the generous support of PRI. I envision the first meeting as a relatively unstructured meeting, providing the chance for us to get to know each other and each other’s research. We can proceed with regular meetings on the following dates, all in Oswald 605 at 12pm:
- February 28
- March 28
- April 25
We can handle sign-ups for presentations on subsequent meeting dates at the first meeting.
If you are interested in participating in this new working group, whether or not you will be able to attend this month, I would appreciate it if you could fill out this quick 2-minute interest survey: https://goo.gl/forms/0RFeZEzhGHiW6ZXm1.
Thanks, and hope to see many of you there,
